After graduating I undertook hiking expeditions in Colombia and Brazil. These trips allowed me to experience entirely new cultures and improve my Portuguese.

On my return to the UK, I moved to London where I found work caring for two neurodivergent children, an experience that taught me a great deal about patience, adaptability, and the importance of consistency. Supporting the children required sensitivity and a proactive approach to learning about autism, as well as demonstrating reliability—being punctual and dependable were crucial for providing the stability they needed. I left the role on excellent terms when their family circumstances changed, and they no longer required full-time care.

Following this, I began babysitting and tutoring while seeking full-time employment. Tutoring quickly reignited my love for teaching, and I found it incredibly fulfilling to help my student build confidence and develop his understanding. This reminded me of how much I enjoy working one-to-one and tailoring my approach to each learner’s needs, which is why I have now made tutoring a bigger part of my life.

In my free time, I volunteer for my local foodbank, and for CAIWU, a trade union where I work across Spanish, Portuguese, and English, supporting members in navigating workplace challenges. I also dedicate time to reading widely.

My teaching style is inherently responsive, grounded in formative assessment and an understanding of diverse learning styles. I believe interactivity is key to effective pedagogy, and I strive to build lessons that actively engage students through techniques like Socratic questioning, scaffolding, and peer instruction.

I prioritise creating a positive feedback loop in every session. By consistently seeking feedback—both explicit and implicit—I can gauge what’s being understood and adapt my teaching in real-time to meet the learner’s needs. Over time, this allows me to build a nuanced understanding of how each student learns best.

Preparation is at the heart of my practice. I approach each lesson with a clear structure and a thorough knowledge of the material, which allows me to be fully present and adaptable during sessions. My goal is to foster a sense of reliability and trust so that students feel comfortable exploring new ideas and making mistakes as part of their learning journey.

Above all, I aim to inspire curiosity and confidence. By making learning relevant, encouraging metacognitive reflection, and celebrating progress, I hope to instill a lasting enthusiasm for the subject in my students.

Alongside tutoring, babysitting, and volunteering, a friend and I create PowerPoints on various Physics topics for each other as a way to explore the subject and overcome the sense of intimidation we’ve both felt about it. I also dedicate time to creative writing, music, and philosophy, ensuring the ideas that inspire and challenge me remain a constant part of my life.
