I graduated from Cambridge University in 2006 with a degree in languages and literature, and qualified as an English teacher in 2008 with a PGCE from the University of East Anglia. I have an MSc in Psychology and am a trained NLP and executive function coach.

I am a specialist in one-to-one tuition; I have been a full time tutor since 2008. I provide academic support for secondary school and university students, specialising in Essay Writing, English and Psychology.

I have a strong track record of supporting ambitious students to secure top grades at GCSE and A level, as well as places at top UK independent schools and universities. Equally, I have experience of helping students with particular challenges ranging from anxiety and school refusal to specific learning difficulties to build their confidence and boost their performance.

I tailor each lesson to the individual student, varying the teaching methods I use and the pace of the lessons accordingly.

In the first lesson I assess the student's current level, and their strengths and weaknesses, and discuss goals of the tuition with the student and their parent.

When tutoring online, I keep the lessons interactive and increase engagement by using varied activities, visual aids and time limits.

I keep lessons focussed but relaxed and lively, encouraging students to enjoy learning and think creatively, whilst also insisting on accuracy and high standards. Colleagues and former students have commented on my gentle and supportive, yet challenging teaching style.

English:

I help students to excel in English Language and English Literature, by developing the skills of independent thought, language analysis, and essay writing. Once a student really learns to question and understand how a text is constructed, they no longer need to rely on learning notes from a teacher or study guide. The ability to reflect independently on the structure, language and meaning of a text pushes students towards the higher grades, as well as encouraging life-long learning and development.

I support students who are struggling to structure and articulate their thoughts in writing, helping them to convey their insights and complex ideas accurately.

Psychology:

Three factors underpin success in Psychology: conceptual understanding, critical thinking and effective writing skills. These are the skills which I help my students develop, and which provide the springboard for success in exams, as well as preparation for higher education.

A level and IB Psychology require a thorough knowledge and understanding of both research methods and key issues and debates within the field of Psychology. I help my students to develop this understanding and then to apply it critically to the different types of questions, which is essential to achieving higher grades. The last step is learning to structure their longer answers in a concise, logical and effective manner.

I am a full time tutor, and when not working, I enjoy reading, writing, playing the piano and singing in a large choir in the City. I also spend time playing tennis, cycling, and exploring new places.
